Helping Leaders Smile

Like Aaron and Hur who found a practical way to support both Moses and the Israelite army in time of battle (Ex. 17), there is something each of us can do that will make a real difference. What is a Life Coach?

In the Church, the roles of the mentor and counselor are accepted and understood, looked to for instruction, direction, and advice. Coaching is a less understood function, a fact complicated by the numbers of people calling themselves coaches, whether or not they have received specialized training.

A life coach or leadership coach has been trained (and coached) in a different skill set than a mentor or counselor. The mentor imparts knowledge; the counselor seeks to heal and restore. The underlying premise of coaching is that God has made you the steward of your life, not the coach. Therefore, a coach does not tell you what to do, but works with you to help you discover what course of action to take and why. A Christian coach is interested in helping you understand what work God is accomplishing within you at this season of your life.

Recently a video has been circulating online of three-year-old Hannah praying with her parents before bedtime. This is no “Now I lay me down to sleep” rehearsed kind of praying!

Hannah not only makes requests, but she makes declarations and praise. She starts off slowly, and then the passion begins to rise. She goes on for several minutes with her mom saying, “That’s right, Hannah. Yes, He is!” This little one is learning to be a spiritual powerhouse! continue reading

Crabs in the Bucket?

Many people living near the ocean enjoy crabbing as well as fishing. Once the first crab is caught, it is placed in a bucket and is likely to crawl out. However, when a second crab is placed in the bucket, the crab-catcher knows that neither will escape. The reason is that when one crab will attempt to crawl out, the other one will pull it other back down. Neither crab will allow the other to get out.

The crab is not getting out itself, but it does not want the other one to get out either! So both stay in the bucket and become somebody’s lunch. continue reading

Agreement With His Blessing

Seeing what Israel had done in battle against the Amorites, King Balak of Moab was afraid that his people were next in Israel’s strategy of intended conquests through the wilderness. Worried that his army was not able to withstand the onslaught, he sought supernatural help to oppose them.

Balak sent messengers with payment to the highly-regarded pagan prophet, Balaam, who had a reputation for releasing blessings or curses. If Balaam would call upon his spiritual resources and curse Israel, then perhaps Moab could drive them back and defeat them. continue reading

As clear as a bell, he heard the Lord say, “We both know someone who will notice.” Sure enough, later on, his wife came in, inspected the paint job, and said, “You didn’t paint the bottom of the last three stairs.”

True story.

I wonder how many of us carry on such conversations with the Lord. Do we expect Him to comment back to us on everyday matters? Or do we just reserve our expectation to hear for the big important things of life? continue reading

The Nature of Sacrifice

As the plague was devastating Jerusalem, King David prayed for mercy. The Angel of the Lord commanded the prophet Gad to instruct David to build an altar and offer a sacrifice on Ornan’s site. When Ornan heard of this, he generously offered to freely provide the oxen, wood, and wheat.

But King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price; for I will not take what is yours for the LORD, or offer a burnt offering which costs me nothing.”

A few years ago, I saw that some confusion began to develop regarding the role of the local church and also fivefold ministers when it came to the marketplace.

Fivefold ministers: apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher (See Eph 4:11)

For years, the expectation was generally held that ministry was done by those in the pulpit and inside the church building. Then the understanding came that all are called to some form of ministry, while most are not called to pulpit ministry.

Whereas those who have entered into this revelation are finding much freedom and joy as the Lord works with and through them apart from the pulpit or even the church service, there is a common misconception about what quantifies spiritual ministry.

We now have CEO’s of corporations being called apostles! And schoolteachers are being called fivefold teachers, as though there were no difference. He may have a powerful God-given ability to lead or teach, but it’s not the same thing as ministry of the Gospel, which the Scriptures make clear.

In this season, many are dissatisfied with the current operation of ministry found on Sunday mornings. They long for the corporate experience of worship as the people of God in which His presence is felt and His power is demonstrated. No longer satisfied with the basic milk of spiritual food, they long to be fed something they can sink their teeth into — something meaty which gives them pause and makes them stronger.

God in His wisdom knew we would need help if we were ever going to mature and become conformed to the image of Christ. So Jesus left His mantle of leadership here on the earth and called men and women to take up that mantle and enter into His service. continue reading

The prophet Elisha asked where it fell. Then he cut a stick and tossed it in the river in same spot and the axehead floated! (2 Kings 6)

Facing Dream Busters

There are a lot of reasons why people discourage others from pursuing their dreams. Many seem to be altruistic - an effort to protect someone from failure or pain. But we can’t protect someone from the pain of life, and certainly not at the cost of their dreams.

Jesus did not get his identity from what people said about him, he got his identity from what the Father said about him!

All things are possible - so, do you believe?

Which Way to Run?

God knew that after 400 years of slavery, the Israelites were not ready to enter their Promised Land. They needed to have a new perspective of who they were and of the God who had delivered them. In His mercy, with the cloud by day and the fire by night, He led them along an alternate route, rather than a direct one.

After a time, they grew discouraged in the wilderness because of the way. (Num 21:4) Their trek was longer and more challenging than they had expected. They fell into ingratitude and grumbling towards the man they had once praised for his vision and leadership. Mutinous plans to return to Egypt were formed, but God squashed the rebellion. He intended that they move forward into their inheritance as a sovereign nation. continue reading

Finding Encouragement

It was a catastrophe.

David and his warriors returned to their home base at Ziklag and were shocked to discover that the city had been raided and burned and that all their wives and children were carried away captive. The men were in great anguish and, in their pain, blamed David and were ready to kill him.

David was greatly distressed. His own family had also been taken, and his life was now in danger from his own men. He was grieving and at a loss what to do.

At that point, David made the choice to strengthen himself in the Lord. He did not wallow in grief-stricken self-pity. As he stood alone, he turned to the One he knew to be a refuge in the day of trouble. He encouraged himself in the Lord.

Permission to Rest Outside of Tahiti

In these times of hurry and over-commitment, we might rationalize that we just can’t afford to step away simply to unwind and recharge. Even though God does not get tired, He set the precedent for us by resting one day after working for six days on Creation. The commandment to rest one day a week was important enough to be included in the initial Ten. Rather than a heavy obligation, this commandment is a mercy gift to us from Him. God also gave Israel holidays (from “holy days”) as times for celebration, worship, and family.

God At Work In You

The prophet Samuel declared that the shepherd boy, David, was destined to be the king of Israel. After Samuel went on his way, David returned to taking care of his father’s sheep.

In those days of waiting, God was at work, preparing David to be a mighty warrior king. Long before he faced Goliath, he fought and killed a lion and a bear who were after the flock. The lonely days of watching his father’s sheep were spent developing courage, faithfulness, and a heart of worship. He was being prepared to rule the Lord’s sheep, the people of Israel.

It was many years of training by warfare, leadership, difficulty, heartbreak, and persecution before he actually became king.

God never wastes anything!

Whatever challenge you may find yourself currently in, know that God has a growth agenda for you in it! And He knows something about your current circumstances and your future that you do not.

Not So Secret Thoughts

What you think about will change your emotions, attitude, actions and circumstances - for the better or the worse!

Sometimes we lie to ourselves rather than facing the truth of what we really think. But your spirit knows the truth about what you think.

By taking an honest look at our thoughts and submitting them to the higher truth of God’s thoughts and meditating on HIS truth, we can make our way prosperous and successful!

Pondering How To Answer

Relationships take work! In dealing with people, we are sometimes hurt by their flaws or sins. We are then left with the choice of how to respond. It can be really complicated at times!

“The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.”(Prov 15:28)

Thoughtful believers want to walk in Christlikeness, however tempted to attack or withdraw. God calls us to relationship and fellowship, knowing that we will rub against one another from time to time. We might be called on to extend mercy and overlook a wrong, or it may be time to speak the truth in love.

“Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (Prov 27:17)

How to know what is appropriate in your given situation?

Jesus taught us that when we see a problem in another, to “take the log out of our own eye first”. This involves dealing with our offended heart, so that we can minister to our brother out of purity. It may also involve getting past our fear of what may happen if we say anything.

I recently asked Diana Gonzalez, a fantastic Lifeforming Coach Trainer, her thoughts about what is appropriate when hurt by others. She gave these clarifying reasons:

Reasons to back off of others whose actions/words are hurting me:

* When they are “weaker vessels” than me, meaning God is asking me to take the pain in order for His work to get done in their lives, so I must exercise mercy and forbearance

* When I am so mad that I will lash out if I speak up, so I have to get some distance and Holy Spirit help first

* When my motives are not pure - it’s more about me than them

Reasons to let people know how their actions affect me:

* So that I don’t write them off in my heart as jerks who don’t deserve vulnerability from me

* So that they grow in maturity by having someone hold up a mirror to their actions in order to not do the same thing to others in their lives and learn new relational skills

* When I sense it’s God’s timing to confront them and move past this kind of behavior

* When I feel like I am the “weaker vessel” and God is not calling me to be a martyr, but to say “ouch” when it hurts because I am in a season of pain and He is not asking me to take more than I can bear, so they will be in trouble with God if they don’t back off

When it is time to speak up, think about what would be God’s best possible outcome. Consider what you can do to give your brother the best chance to respond well.

“If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.” (Rom 12:18)

May the Lord grant you increased wisdom, favor, and grace in all your relationships!

Seasons of Change

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” (Eccl. 3:1)

Just as the earth experiences the change of seasons, so do we, spiritually speaking.

In the spring of our walk with the Lord, everything is fresh and alive. We were born again into spring, as spring lambs, to whom every day is warm sunshine in the love of God, and refreshing showers of joy in the Holy Spirit. Life is exciting and couldn’t be better! Then the seasons begin to change and summer appears. It is a time of much work and the promise of harvest. The days are long and glorious. We begin to mature and gain strength, walking in authority and spiritual gifts. At this time, we begin to take on the characteristics of mature sheep, bearing wool, producing for the Master. It is a time of exhilaration in the things of God.

But somehow, in all of our growth and learning, we didn’t yet understand about the seasons of the Lord, even though nature and the Scriptures teach it. We didn’t know that autumn and winter were coming…continued

You have been given the ability to be an avenue of refreshing to others. There is life-giving water from the well of salvation within that you can draw out to give to someone else. (Is. 12:3)

We are living in a time in which people need encouragement. God is sending people your way who need a refreshing drink. Jesus said, speaking of the Spirit, that from your innermost being will flow rivers of living water. (John 7:38-39)

You may not think you have anything to offer that discouraged or troubled one. But as you pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, the Spirit of God will begin flow out of you. You are the conduit to release the love and power of God. You have something to give. Seek to be one who encourages and strengthens. It will return back to you.

“A word in due season, how good it is!” (Prov. 15:23)

A Foolish Consistency

Surrounded by guests at his birthday banquet, King Herod swore to the dancing girl that he would give her whatever she wanted, even up to half his kingdom. Prompted by her mother, she asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.

Grieved at her request, but because his oath was made in front of all his guests, he agreed. And John was killed.

Keeping your promise or staying with your original decision is a usually a good idea. Far too many promises are made and broken these days.

But sometimes the initial decision, like Herod’s, is faulty. For many people, it’s just easier to stay with the first decision, rather than go to the trouble of attempting a new solution. Additionally, the desire to save face and avoid embarrassment fights against admitting that a change is now needed. This is pride and foolish consistency. Continue reading

What you don’t know CAN hurt you

Life is a great teacher. And the older you get, hopefully, the more you realize how much more you still need to learn.

If we apply our hearts to gaining wisdom, we can actually become even wiser than our teachers. But first, appreciate the wisdom your teachers have gained.

God has established the laws of natural realm and the laws of the spiritual. Paying heed to these laws can keep you from serious harm — the law of gravity for example.

I have met so many Christians with little to no understanding of spiritual laws, and who are bewildered and despairing because of those unknown laws at work within their every day life. Unless they are in enough pain to listen, there is often scoffing at the idea that they themselves may have set something into motion, or allowed a law to repeat through ignorance or foolishness.

It’s just easier to blame somebody else. Or decide God doesn’t care.

There are a number of spiritual laws at work in your life right now. Like gravity, they can be working for you or against you, depending on what you have activated.

Add to these laws the Principle of Increase and you have the making of either disaster or abundance. When a farmer sows seed, he reaps a multiplied harvest much greater than what he sowed.

Here’s a spiritual law you don’t ignore without penalty:

“Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.” (Matt 7:1-2)

Sitting around mocking, criticizing, judging others not only causes your own spiritual blindness and pride to grow, but it will cause you to be on the receiving end.

Despising your parents for their failures, weaknesses, and sins insures that you yourself will have even more in your own life. In fact, in the very area where you judge and dishonor your parents is exactly where you will reap in your own life.

How many parents having problems with their children have realized that they are on the receiving end of how they treated their own parents?

We are usually so blind to what seeds we planted, and then we forgot that we planted them.

The good news is that we can appropriate higher laws and overturn the operation of negative ones in our lives through repentance and choosing a new way. The Word of God reveals this better way.

“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned. Give, and it will be given to you.” (Luke 6:35-38)

One of the major aspects of Biblical prayer counseling is to help the person see where they have violated the commands of God and begun a process of negative reaping in their own lives.

Through the voice of the Holy Spirit, dreams, prophetic ministry, the Word of God and all the ways God continues to speak– we will receive the instruction and life that comes from hearing God speak if we will tune our ears to listen!

In a public place, we often overhear conversations that reveal a great deal about a person’s life, attitudes, and priorities. They talk as though no one were there to hear. Indeed, people on cell phones often talk louder than usual, oblivious to who is nearby.

On the job or at church or at home, we may have heard statements about ourselves or those we love — remarks we were not expected to hear.

Consider this:

“Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who esteem His name.” (Malachi 3:16)

When the Lord listens to your conversations, does He hear His name? Or is it only at church?

Mention His name today in your conversations. Give Him something to listen to and remember.

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”

Jesus favorite method of teaching was telling stories in order to convey spiritual truth - parables. When He spoke of seed falling on good ground, He wasn’t giving advice to farmers, but speaking of the Word of God falling upon receptive hearts. When He told of the wise man who built his house on the rock, He taught the importance of a life with a strong and sturdy spiritual foundation.

By speaking metaphorically, Jesus awakened the spiritual ears of His listeners, giving them something to think about. Parables gave them a chance to gradually understand and accept His words as they considered the meaning.

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. (Prov 25:2)

Sometimes we may wish to have been there to sit at His feet and hear His wonderful stories. Yet even now, the Holy Spirit is using the same method to give us personal instruction while we dream. We receive individual “night parables” as He seeks to awaken us to understanding.

Scripture speaks favorably of dreams, and we read of Joseph the dreamer who was able to interpret the dreams of the cupbearer, the baker, also Pharaoh.

Not realizing that God wanted us to understand our dreams, we shrugged them off as last night’s pizza, or ourselves as too unspiritual to figure it out.

In this last days outpouring, God is speaking to you, to me, to believers and to unbelievers through dreams (Acts 2:17). Through study of the metaphors of dreams, visions, and parables of the Bible, we can begin to gain a much greater understanding of our own night parables.

Paul used the example of an athelete as how we are to pursue the high calling of Jesus Christ. We are to train, restrain and develop ourselves to come up higher and pursue the calling of God on our lives.

What is a network?

A network is an organization of people and/or ministries uniting together. It is similar in the way denominational churches are connected to one another, except a network (in our case at least) is less hierarchical. People partner with organizations and networks because they believe in the vision and want to promote it. Some ministries call their contributors and associates “partners”. People want to belong; they want to work together; they want to associate with others like them.

In our network, people give and pray and serve and receive benefits of that association, just the same as people do when they join a church. A network generally has a larger focus than a local church. Participating in DSAN can either be in addition to or instead of a local church; it depends on your situation.

Where Are You Looking?

When people are under stress, fear and desperation, that is when they begin to make wrong responses to situations. Our wrong responses at best don’t help us any, and at worse… make things worse!

It is in times of difficulty is when we ESPECIALLY need to look to the Lord, and make right, godly responses to the challenges facing us. Obedience to the Lord and His word include our service, tithing, giving and ministry– these are the seeds to sow when we most need a harvest!

Victory Over Reproach

The Word instructs us that we are to live above reproach– to conduct ourselves in such a way that our critics can find no fault in us.

Of course, there are people who are always going to look to find fault, criticize and judge. We can have victory over reproach, and not fall into the trap of judgment and condemnation of others by sowing mercy, accepting mercy and living in faith that God is truly on our side!

But more importantly is that this allows you multiple extra ways to follow our Upcoming Events feed. You always could follow the DSAN calendar through Google Calendar, but doing so isn’t the most obvious thing in the world, and not everyone uses Google Calendar.

So now, through Feedburner, you can follow along using any RSS or Atom reader that you want. This means you can keep up with our upcoming events on your My Yahoo page, on your iGoogle personalized page, and a variety of others. It’s My Life!

When a person becomes a teenager, they begin to question the rules by which their parents have governed them. As they mature (one hopes!) they will come to realize that some of the rules are wisdom and for their benefit– going to bed at a reasonable hour so they can make it to work in the morning, brushing their teeth so they don’t rot out of their mouth, etc.

But many teenagers who think they are finally “free” of their parents rules actually become slaves to their rebellion.

We are not to require continual monitoring, control and correction to do the things that are wise and godly. That is what children require. As we grow and mature, we are to take responsibility for our own lives– naturally and spiritually– as WE are the ones who will answer to God for them!

Since people have asked for an easy way to give tithes and offerings now that DSAN is not having weekly services, we have added a button over in the sidebar to allow you to send tithes and offerings via Paypal. Paypal will allow you to send money from your bank account or credit card.

For those of you who do not know much about Paypal, please look over the information in their Security Center. Paypal operates in 190 markets, and has been a part of eBay since 2002, so you should be able to send money from most anywhere in the world that you happen to be.

For quite some time, we have been sensing and prophesying change. We have been like the caterpillar encased in his tight cocoon, waiting for the day of release. That season of metamorphosis has come with great struggle, challenges and uncertainty, during which we have all been dramatically transformed. Now, as a butterfly, we are emerging into the next stage of maturity and God-chosen purpose to live a new kind of life.

Destiny Spirit has always been a training, equipping and sending ministry. We have seen many people come through, receive prophetic ministry, teaching, training and healing. Now we are evolving and expanding into a training ministry without walls; a trans-local network of people committed to advancing the Kingdom of God. We have moved from a pastoral mode to an apostolic one.

We extend the invitation to you to continue to walk with us in this expansion!

Kingdom Unity

Unity is powerful, and it gets God’s attention. Scripture tells us that where there is unity, there is God’s blessing, provision, power, and presence.

True Kingdom unity begins at the ground level of relationships. We must maintain unity by learning to successfully overcome sin, conflict and transitions in our relationships. When we continue to walk in agreement with the higher purposes for which our relationships exist, we will see and enjoy the fulfillment of God’s promises and blessings.

Throw Out the Slave and Her Son

In order to come into the fullness of our true identity, we have to break off the bondage of old mindsets. We are to live and serve out of true Sonship, and not slavery.

Rather than deal with the responsibility of freedom, many people revert back to a slave mentality. But in order to obtain the full legal rights of our Sonship in Christ Jesus, we must persevere and reach out for the freedom to which we were purchased!

Metamorphosis

Our actions as the Body are important, but our worship of Jesus the Head of the Body is far more important!

Why We Gather

Hearts Of Stone

The enemy has strategies of infiltration, depression and passivity to get believers off-track in their devotion and discipleship to the Lord. Getting people to develop a heart of stone is part of the strategy.

A heart of stone may seem like a defense mechanism against pain and wounding, but it is also a wall that keeps us from intimacy and receiving love from the Lord and people.

A heart of stone will grow from a root of bitterness, but surrendering to God’s strategies of peace, love and intimacy will melt a heart of stone and give us a heart pliable in His hands.

The Day After The Word

Keeping It Real

God says he has hidden the secrets of the kingdom from the “wise” and revealed them to “little children.” God says we are to come to him like little children— because children are the most inquisitive, open and eager to believe.

Like children, we are to be filled with wonderment and delight in everything God does!

And though we are to receive with eagerness, there is still wisdom and measure to be applied to how we weigh and determine the origin of the revelation we receive.

God Wants us FAT!

We need to believe in the supernatural aspects of salvation. God has called us to be faithful= full of faith!

We can expect that something good is going to happen when we do what God wants us to do. As we yield to Him and preach the Kingdom, we will see and experience His power at work.

Seeing the Glory

We can hear about the glory, but God wants us to actually experience it. Seeking Him is crucial to seeing the glory. We need tune in to what God is doing, and respond!

In scripture, we see that the Glory of God came when everyone was united in worship. The same is true today! We should expect Jesus in the midst of our corporate worship–and to experience the Glory!

Meeting With God

To “wait on the Lord” as scripture instructs is not intended to be a passive state. Rather, we are to “lie in wait” with watchful expectancy and focused, unwavering attention– like one who is waiting to ambush someone. We are to ambush the Lord!

When we sense the Lord’s presence, that isn’t the end goal, it’s our invitation. Learn to discern His presence, position yourself to enter in, and ambush Him! Like Jacob who wrestled with God all night, we must determine not to let him go until we have an encounter with him that changes us forever.

Positioning for Divine Encounters

God’s intent for the people of Israel is that they would be a KINGDOM of priests. Divine encounters weren’t to be just for one person, but corporate encounters with the living God.

God has promised to reveal himself and to pour out His Spirit– we must position ourselves to receive. The prerequisites are not complicated: Love God and love one another; present yourself to God; seek the things above and forgive as you have been forgiven.

As we seek after God, he will reveal himself to us.

The Transformed Life

True encounters with God produce change. God is after transformation– evidence in our lives of our relationship with Him.

We must be willing to be changed, and willing to be available and pay the price for change: a surrendered heart, life and personal sacrifice for the sake of others.

Avoiding Shipwreck

When the storms of life come is when people will often cast away the very things that they need in order to survive. Tossing away the anchor the last-ditch effort of desperation, but it is not the way to avoid shipwreck.

If we will heed the voice of wisdom, hold to the anchor of faith and fight the good fight, we can avoid being shipwrecked in our faith. Hope, the Word of God, confession and consistency are the very anchors that will see you through the storm. Hold fast, and fight the good fight of faith.
