Reclaiming the Realm of Dreams

Spirituality has been in vogue for several years now, and many are looking for spiritual answers and experiences outside of the Church. In the desire to hear God, get answers, have experiences, or know the future, people (even some Christians) have sought psychics and mediums.

However, we are exhorted to seek God instead.

“When they say to you, ‘Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,’ should not a people consult their God?”… (Isaiah 8:19 NAS)

There has not been much in-depth teaching or understanding of the spirit realm in much of the Christian community. And, much of what has been presented is inadequate and incorrect.

Even worse, many avoid anything that is perceived as spiritual activity out of fear of getting involved with demons. Yet Jesus promised that if we were to ask our Father for a fish, He would not give us a snake.

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” (Matt 7:11 NAS)

God is the author of all spirituality, and we should not relinquish our spiritual inheritance, simply because some non-believers have seemed to focus on these things. It is time for us to become spiritually-minded.

This includes embracing both the doctrines of the Bible and genuine, godly, supernatural experiences.

Our inheritance includes the realm of dreams.
Many of the early Church fathers regarded dreams as positive and, even, necessary to spiritual growth. As children of God, we are to anticipate His communication with us, including through our dreams.

“In a dream, a vision of the night, When sound sleep falls on men, While they slumber in their beds,Then He opens the ears of men, And seals their instruction, That He may turn man aside from his conduct, And keep man from pride; He keeps back his soul from the pit, And his life from passing over into Sheol.” (Job 33:15-18 NAS)

Rather than dismiss all dreams as unimportant, or shrink back in fear, let us consider the inheritance we have and begin to ask God to speak to us in our dreams. He has promised that the last days would be marked by prophecy, visions, and dreams.

“‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘that I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams” (Acts 2:17 NAS).

Dreams may give insight or warning or direction.
A number of people in the Bible had spiritual dreams, but they are not the only ones. Creativity and inventions also, many times, began as literal dreams in the night.

Einstein’s famous theory of relativity came from a dream. Handel first heard The Messiah in a dream. Elias Howe invented the sewing machine after seeing it in a dream.

Will you reclaim your inheritance?
It is possible God wants to deepen your spirituality by awakening a desire within you for His mystery. Ask for spiritual dreams that you can meditate on and search for meaning. Enter into the fullness of your spiritual inheritance. It may even lead others to worship God!

“The king said to them, “I had a dream and my spirit is anxious to understand the dream…”

“The king answered Daniel and said, ‘Surely your God is a God of gods and a Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery.'” (Dan 2:3,47 NAS)
